The #iWill Movement is delighted to welcome Sizewell C as the latest organisation to sign the Power of Youth Charter — a national commitment to ensuring young people are valued, heard, and empowered to shape the decisions that affect their lives.
A Commitment to Youth Voice at Every Level
By adopting the Charter, Sizewell C has committed to embedding youth voice across its work and expanding meaningful opportunities for young people in East Suffolk and beyond. These new pledges include:
- Prioritising youth-led social action
- Embedding young people in decision‑making structures
- Collaborating with youth‑focused organisations
- Tracking and reporting progress on youth social action
- Celebrating young people’s impact
More than 400 organisations across the UK have signed the Power of Youth Charter since its launch in 2013 — from major employers to councils and charities — all united by a commitment to championing youth leadership.
Nigel Cann, Chief Executive Officer at Sizewell C, shared:
“I’m excited we’ve signed up to the Power of Youth Charter. Our team already does a great job in supporting and listening to young people. By signing the Charter and establishing new commitments, we’re formalising the opportunity to deliver even more youth social action.”
Building on Strong Foundations in East Suffolk
Sizewell C already delivers a wide-ranging programme of support for young people across the region. This includes:
- Bespoke school outreach programmes
- Hands‑on STEM workshops
- Early careers events
- Partnerships with colleges and training providers
A standout example from the past year is the project’s partnership with the Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality (ISCRE) on the Beyond Boundaries programme — supporting young people from underrepresented communities into lasting careers and leadership roles. ISCRE also supported Sizewell C in adopting the Power of Youth Charter.
Chelsy, a Beyond Boundaries participant, played a vital role in reviewing Sizewell C’s commitments. She said:
“I was introduced to Youth Social Action through my college, which gave me the chance to shape events and take on roles outside of my comfort zone. When Beyond Boundaries asked if I wanted to support Sizewell C in reviewing its commitments for the charter, I was so surprised an opportunity like this even came up. I’m really grateful to have been part of this process.”
Stephen Skeet, Director of Business Development and Partnerships at Volunteering Matters, welcomed the news:
“We’re delighted that Sizewell C have signed the Charter, joining other organisations across Suffolk making commitments on how they can support young people to have a lead role in communities, and influence the decisions that affect them through their volunteering and social action.”
Youth Voice in Action: The Sizewell C Youth Council
Since 2024, Sizewell C has convened a Youth Council made up of 12 students from Alde Valley Academy in Leiston. The council offers:
- A direct platform for young people to share their priorities
- Access to the project’s senior leadership
- Opportunities to question experts on everything from environmental planning to future job opportunities
- Insights into careers across the energy sector
Last year, the Youth Council even toured 10 Downing Street, following a pledge made by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and supported by local MP Jenny Riddell‑Carpenter — an unforgettable moment celebrating the power of youth leadership in action.
Sizewell C’s commitment to the Power of Youth Charter marks an important milestone — not only for the organisation, but for the young people whose voices and talents will help shape the future of East Suffolk.
