Across the UK, young people are driving change in their communities – from vibrant towns to bustling cities and coastal hubs. This initiative brings together local organisations, leaders and youth voices to create connected ecosystems where social action thrives. Together, we’re building places that value, support and celebrate young people as powerful agents of change.
Seen and Heard: Young People Leading Change in their Hometowns
Ipswich
As the UK’s first Town of Youth Social Action, Ipswich continues to lead the way — from youth-led Hacks that have engaged over 1,250 young people to a 45-metre mural on safety co-created with local students. With both Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk County Council now signed up to the Power of Youth Charter, youth voice sits at the heart of the town’s civic and cultural life, not as a side project, but as part of how Ipswich works.
Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre
Spearheaded by United Youth Allicance, Blackpool’s commitment to youth voice keeps growing – with over 30 organisations now signed up to the Power of Youth Charter. From young people supporting peers through mental health crises to organisations rethinking who holds power in the room, the ambition is clear: making Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre the UK’s first Coast of Social Action.
Brighton & Hove
Brighton & Hove is now a City of Youth Social Action, with Trust for Developing Communities leading the charge to put young people at the heart of decisions on everything from the environment to community safety. It’s a city ready to be redesigned by the people who know it best — its young people.
Gloucester
Gloucester is officially on board, with the City Council and Venture Community Hub leading and a growing network local organisations — from CHISPA to Young Gloucestershire – already signed up to the Power of Youth Charter. A brilliant show of a city backing its young people from day one.
Newcastle
Newcastle’s movement is being built on strong foundations, with The Key as lead delivery partner bringing together a committed alliance of five key organisations to champion youth-led change across the city. It’s early days, but the shift from youth-informed to youth-led is real — powered by young people stepping fully into leadership, and next up: building the trust and connections needed to break that leadership through to the city’s wider structural power.
Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire has joined as a Place of Youth Social Action, with Young Northants leading the charge to connect schools, charities and businesses around one goal — giving young people real influence over the decisions that shape their communities.
Bristol
Bristol is a city with youth-led movements in its bones, from the bus boycotts to today’s environmental activism — and that spirit shows in a strong, committed alliance of over 40 organisations, spearheaded by Creative Youth Network. Ambassadors are pushing past “just ideas” to challenge for young people’s presence in every room, with Redcliffe’s emerging youth social action group already turning that ambition into practice.
Thetford
Thetford is a community with a big heart. The Mayor of Thetford bought together a group of people and organisations who are now leading the movement in the town, as a strong alliance giving young people a voice and including them in more decision making processes that they haven’t been before. From sports clubs to schools and alternative provisions, Thetford is making headway as a Town of Social Action
