23 November 2023

Thursday 23rd November was a big day for the #iwill Movement as we gathered in Parliament to celebrate a decade of empowering young people through social action. Amidst the festivities, we bid farewell to the incredible Tom McEachen as co-chair of the #iwill partnership board.
Tom has played a pivotal role in the #iwill Movement and has made vital contributions to our collective mission. Like many, Tom grew up facing the challenges of poverty. Despite facing adversity and the struggle of growing up in one of Scotland’s most deprived council estates, Tom persevered with a positive outlook and developed a passion for politics and advocacy from a young age. Recognised by a teacher who saw his potential, Tom channelled his passion into making a difference in his community.

Tom’s journey from school representative to becoming an Ambassador of the #iwill Movement is a testament to the transformative power of social action. His commitment to championing Youth Social Action has helped to shape the #iwill Movement over the years.
Stepping into Tom’s shoes is Sami Gichki, a remarkable individual with a story that exemplifies resilience. As a Baloch asylum seeker from southwest Pakistan, Sami’s decade-long struggle for recognition and belonging has fuelled his commitment to social action. His journey reflects the core ethos of the #iwill Movement—empowering young people to overcome barriers and contribute to positive change.

Sami’s appointment as the co-chair of the #iwill Movement, alongside co-founder Dame Julia Cleverdon, signifies a new era. His speech at the event echoes the spirit of collective empowerment, urging everyone to join hands in building a better world.
On handing the reins to new co-chair Sami Gichki, Tom said:
“I’m really excited to be handing over the role of co-chair of the #iwill movement to Sami. He is someone who really understands where the movement needs to go. He lives and breathes the power of youth and will bring a fresh perspective that I think will ensure the movement continues to grow over the coming years.”
Introducing the #iwill Assembly
Alongside the announcement of a new co-chair, the #iwill Movement introduced the #iwill Assembly—a dynamic platform designed to amplify the voices of young people. Crafted by young minds, partners, funders, and key stakeholders, the assembly aims to foster collaboration, share insights, and co-create actionable steps.
“The iwill assembly is just the iwill movement with an update; more efficient, more collaborative, more sustainable. Together, we are embarking on a journey that is transcending boundaries, embracing diversity, and fostering a culture of empowerment.” – Sami Gichki
As the #iwill Assembly takes its first steps, it is a collective endeavour to maximize opportunities for young people to shape and lead change. It brings together representatives from all four nations, funders, sector groups, place leaders, and the youth, united by a common purpose—to make a difference.
Join us in celebrating a decade of youth-led change, bidding farewell to an outstanding co-chair, and welcoming a new era with the establishment of the #iwill Assembly. Together, we continue to empower the leaders of today and tomorrow.
