Case Study: Points of Light

2019-09-18T09:46:57+01:00

Points of Light are outstanding individual volunteers – people who are making a change in their community. Every weekday the Prime Minister recognises an inspirational volunteer with the Daily Point of Light award. There are now over 1100 Points of Light in the UK, highlighting an enormous range of innovative and inspirational volunteering across our country. Each Point of Light had an idea they decided to make a reality – everything from tackling knife crime to supporting families of dementia patients. Their actions have changed lives. And their stories can inspire thousands more to get involved or start their own initiatives. [...]

Case Study: The Scouts – A Million Hands

2019-09-18T09:47:21+01:00

Nearly 75% of Scouts support their communities at least once a week. It’s a powerful force for good, but not all young people get the same opportunity. Research from ComRes found that 82% of 12-24 year olds want to take part in social action, yet only 36% believe they have the chance to do so. This means the UK could be missing out on as much as 15.4 million hours of youth volunteering each month. The will is there; it’s just the opportunities they lack. If we can provide these opportunities – prioritising quality as well as scale and reach – [...]

2019-05-17T14:29:35+01:00

Nancy, the Young People Volunteering Project Co-ordinator at University Hospital Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, writes on the progress of their Pears #iwill fund young volunteer programme. "September and October are very busy months for the Voluntary Services team. As students return to Bristol’s universities, colleges and schools, we see an increase in the number of applications to join the Trust’s team of volunteers. This year, these applications have increased further because of the partnership and recruitment work that has been funded by the Young People Volunteering project. An initial partnership pilot programme carried out with City of Bristol College, and some [...]

Embedding youth social action to support mental health and wellbeing Today is World Mental Health Day 2018, a day where we will hear from people and organisations all around the world about their own mental health stories, and what they are doing to make a positive difference to the lives of those coping with mental health issues. Today, young people’s voices will be a critical part of the discussion, as they talk about the well-heard, and the newer challenges young people face when it comes to mental health and wellbeing in 2018, and help shape solutions to these challenges for their [...]

2019-05-17T14:09:24+01:00

Youth United Foundation Panel Ambassador and RAF Air Cadet Jordan responds to announcement of the Government's £5 million investment in uniformed youth services. A recent announcement by Minister for Civil Society Tracey Crouch will see “a new £5 million fund” with the aim to “increase places in uniformed youth groups to reach vulnerable young people and allow for expansion in deprived areas”. For Jordan, being an ambassador on the Youth United Foundation panel has been an amazing experience and has provided him with an insight into the hard but essential work charities such as Youth United Foundation do. #iwill Ambassador Adam on Social Mobility

2019-05-17T14:13:17+01:00

The past month has been an exciting one for the Education and Social Mobility Sector! On 2nd September, Get2Learn - a youth advocacy group I founded - and the Fair Education Alliance - a UK coalition of social mobility organisations - held the First Fair Education Youth Summit! Attended by young people involved in youth social action, including fellow #iwill Ambassador Usman Ahmed, the event demonstrated the power of us as youth and the incredible insights we have to share on how the sector can improve inequality in University Admissions and Character Development. Following the event and for the first time, [...]
