My name is Razannah, I’m 16 and I’m an #iwill Ambassador from Scotland. On November 27th 2018, the annual Young Scot Awards took place, and this year I was lucky enough to be chair of the judging panel.
I was chosen to be part of this year’s panel through my work with Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018, as I am also a member of Communic18, a core co-design team for the year. As chair I was given the opportunity to present the opening speech on behalf of Young Scot at the awards dinner. This was quite daunting as I had an audience of around 750 people. However, after rehearsing multiple times I became confident and was more excited than nervous.
Through this speech I wanted young people to know that they are valued and that their opinion matters. It was message to all leaders across Scotland, listen to your young people because we are strong, confident and intelligent individuals that care about our future and want to change it for the better.
When the day came, I walked up on stage, took a deep breath and presented my speech just as I wanted to. It was so incredible, I had so much love and support from everyone including the First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon. It was surreal moment and one I will never forget.
“I would like to send a message to all of those in power across Scotland tonight. You will be judged how you treat your youngest citizens, and out of those, the ones most in need of your consideration.
Our nation has once again shown the world how to party, how to celebrate, how to have a good time, and how to build a community we can be proud of. Each and every young person who has made a contribution to the Year of Young People has helped to make this country an even better place to live, now and for generations to come.
Scotland is changing, and these awards tonight will show you how. We are more diverse than ever, and we are not just a tolerant nation, but we are a welcoming and loving one. Our nation’s young people are at the heart of demonstrating this to the world – and I believe that love has inspired all of our finalists tonight.
My challenge to each and every one of you here is to take your energy, passion, belief in yourself and in the young people of Scotland to make sure that every year is one in which young people play a vital part.”
