As an international student, I find it incredibly important to get involved in your new community. It was a challenging move to the UK, and I battled with social anxiety during my foundation year, which made putting myself out there quite tough. Thanks to some encouragement from great mentors, I took on more volunteering roles and began working with my university and local groups. With so many opportunities available, I have found it difficult to only focus on one social action topic. Currently, I work on a nature conservation project, help with youth groups, and assist with a local initiative determined to fight climate change. There is something out there for everyone to get involved in no matter what your interests are. Nobody should be afraid to ask for help if they are nervous to take the first step into social action. The rewarding feeling of helping others will always trump your fear.
