I’ve been involved in social action since I was just 13. I started as a Lance Corporal in the Army Cadets, supported Age Concern, and just recently I committed to a year of volunteering, giving 1,700 hours to City Year UK. I’ve been working in my community supporting young people to overcome the struggles they face – support that I wish I’d had growing up in Southwark.
My service year at City Year has, without a doubt, taught me that young people in the UK today need guidance, and need someone to believe that they can change the world, because unfortunately too often all they hear is “can’t”. But that just isn’t true. I know that my social action experience – with City Year and for Age Concern – has had a huge impact on the world around me and on me as a person, helping me grow my confidence and communication skills.
