  • Continue to invest in youth social action through our Young Roots grants programme, investing up to £4million a year until 2018
  • Share the six quality principles with HLF grantees who are engaging young people
  • Highlight great examples of youth social action where young people are caring for and sharing our diverse heritage.

In the last year, we have invested over £4.6million in heritage projects specifically for young people through our Young Roots programme, including opportunities for social action. We have shared the six quality principles with grantees through HLF’s online community, and wider social media, and encouraged others to make a pledge.

New case studies highlighting how young people have cared for and shared our diverse heritage have been promoted on our website. These range from young volunteers conserving the natural heritage of Streatham Common in London, to recording the impact of the First World War on local communities.

In addition, we have created opportunities for young people to become ambassadors for heritage, and co-creators on our Routes2Roots social media campaign in Birmingham. We have also hosted 20 young people from the National Citizens Service Leaders to progress our plans for involving more young people in our future work.

Quote from Charlotte Hill, CEO at Step Up To Serve
“The #iwill campaign is driven by leaders from across society who are committed to making youth social action a normal part of growing up in the UK.
We know that young people want to play an active part in improving their communities, and that in doing so, they develop their own skills for work and life.
Over 350 cross-sector organisations so far have pledged to support youth social action, and say #iwill. What will you do?”
