Department for Education

  • Seek opportunities to ensure that youth social action opportunities are available to all young people, including those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Consider the inclusion of youth social action, signposting a case study setting out good practice, in the work experience guidance for colleges that’s due to be updated in the New Year.

Supporting schools to develop well rounded and resilient pupils is a priority for the Department. We want to ensure that all young people get the best start in life, with the opportunity to receive the knowledge and skills, the right advice at the right time, and great, challenging life shaping experiences that will ensure their future success.

The Department already carries out a range of activity to support young people to become well-rounded, working with the National Citizen Service in their ambition to make it a rite of passage for all 16 and 17 year olds, and in celebrating those organisations that are already working to instill positive traits in young people through the Character Awards.

Quote from Edward Timpson MP, Minister of State at the Department for Education
“Our pledge from the Department for Education sets out our support to ensure those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds, who we know can be less likely to take part, are also able to benefit from the opportunities that social action can and does provide.

I encourage all schools and colleges to make a pledge to the #iwill campaign today, to ensure your students are able to benefit from youth social action.”
