British Gas

British Gas believes in the power of social action to enable young people to fulfill their true potential, through gaining confidence, experience and skills.  We will step up to serve, supporting young people and helping to increase the awareness of and involvement in youth social action through volunteering.

  • Aim to treble the number of volunteering days taken by our employees, and encourage them to give their time, and their skills, in part to support young people and social action initiatives.
  • Take a leadership position by promoting the value of youth social action.  We will showcase youth social action in our company reporting, and communication with stakeholders and employees.
  • Provide our expertise to measure and evaluate the success of the campaign on behalf of all parties.
  • Use our recruitment processes to encourage young people to tell us about their youth social action experience, and let them know how much we value the experience they gain through it.

British Gas believes in the power of social action to give young people vital skills, experience and confidence.

We create opportunities for our young workforce to participate in social action by including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) in our engineering apprenticeship. We’re celebrating 10 years in partnership with the DofE in 2016. In this time 2,200 BG apprentices have completed their Gold DofE Award and volunteered 100,000 hours in their community. In 2015, we estimate that 176 apprentices will have volunteered 4,700 hours in their local communities. We’ve also committed to be the DofE’s  headline partner for their Skills for Work campaign in 2016.

We remain committed to supporting all our people to participate in social action by giving them two days in work time a year to do so. We estimate that approx 3,500 BG people will have volunteered 26,000 hours by the end of 2015 – with over 11,500 of these youth and skills related.

We have played a lead role in developing horizon, a free online tool for data on youth social action in the UK (www.horizondata.net); horizon brings together in one place all of the data on youth social action activities to enable powerful insights into young people’s participation in social action across the UK.

In recruitment, we embedded social action beyond our Apprentice recruitment to include Graduates and Professional Hiring, and have plans to roll out to our Contact Centre recruitment by early next year.

Finally, we have supported the campaign in various ways, for example at a presentation to the Association of Colleges Annual Conference where one of our young ambassadors and DofE Award holders shared the value of their social action journey.

Quote from Abi Robins, Director of CR Programmes, British Gas

British Gas believes in the power of social action to give young people vital skills, experience and confidence. That’s why we support our apprentices to achieve their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The DofE develops the skills we look for in our employees like initiative and a determination to learn and progress. It also helps our new recruits to relate to our customers and their lives through the time they spend volunteering in the community.
We’re committed to supporting the skills development of all young people across Britain to help them in the workplace. That’s why we’re delighted to be DofE’s Skills for Work Headline Partner 2016 and why I’m urging young people and employers alike to recognise the essential skills gained by youth social action programmes like the DofE”
